Durante la seconda guerra mondiale la marina americana, con l'aiuto dello scienziato James Longstreet, sta sperimentando nuove tecniche per rendere le proprie navi invisibili ai radar nemici. Ma avviene un fatto imprevedibile: una corazzata U.S.A. con tutto l'equipaggio, forse per un campo anomalo improvviso di onde elettromagnetiche, scompare nel nulla. Due marinai della nave, David Herdeg e Jim Parker, tuffatisi nell'acqua in un estremo tentativo di salvarsi, si ritrovano scaraventati nel futuro.
