Fritz Lang, dopo aver ricevuto un'allettante offerta da Goebbels, fugge repentinamente dalla Germania nazista, e prima di approdare negli Stati Uniti, si rifugia in Francia, dove realizza Liliom, da un testo teatrale di Molnar che aveva già ispirato un film nel 1930 di Frank Borzage. Lang usa un tono 'spiritoso e irriverente' per una tragicommedia che deluse il pubblico dell'epoca, ma che il regista riteneva una delle sue migliori opere.
