Il7 aprile 1926, Violet Gibson, appartenente ad una aristocraticafamiglia irlandese, attentò alla vita di Benito Mussolini, a Roma,sparando un colpo di pistola che ferì il Duce al naso. Il tentatoomicidio diede il via ad una delle più lunghe inchieste del regimefascista, inchiesta che tuttavia non riuscì a far luce sui moltimisteri che avvolgevano la vicenda. Il caso fu chiuso in fretta, ladonna venne dichiarata affetta da infermità mentale e estradata inInghilterra. Finì i suoi giorni in un ospedale psichiatrico, nonostantei dubbi di investigatori, medici e testimoni circa la sua pazzia.
