Il truffatore Steve Blair (Robert Preston) ingaggia lo scrittore alcolista Paul Ferris (Tony Randall) per realizzare la sceneggiatura di un film da ambientare su un'isola greca senza attrattive. Blair la spaccia al produttore Tony Dallas (Walter Matthau) come un paradiso di bellezze e amori facili, in cui sono persino stati ritrovati preziosissimi (ma falsi) reperti archeologici.
Marton DaCosta mette su una commedia nella commedia, in cui la verità non si distingue facilmente dalla goliardica menzogna. Il protagonista infatti è un imbroglione incallito che si inventa qualcosa di inimmaginabile, tentando di fare le scarpe a una vecchia volpe interpretata con macchiettistica abilità da Walter Matthau.
