Nella seconda metà del XVII secolo lo scienziato Girolamo Fumagalli tentò un audace quanto orribile esperimento che denominò Thanatografia. Si trattava di estirpare i bulbi oculari di una persona nello stesso momento in cui moriva per fissarne su una lastra fotografica, mediante una macchina da lui creata, l'ultima immagine impressa sulla retina.
