La rivista "Amalgamate Dairies" assume David Rutherford, un ex agente dell'FBI che si è dedicato allo spionaggio industriale, per indagare su un nuovo prodotto chiamato "The stuff", che sta mettendo in crisi le vendite di gelati. Mentre David è in viaggio verso la città fantasma virtuale di Stader, Virginia, dove è stato testato "The stuff", Jason, un bambino di otto anni, scopre il protoplasmatico "Stuff" strisciare tutto solo intorno al frigorifero! Rapidamente l'orribile segreto di "The stuff" è rivelato: si tratta di un parassita che divora dall'interno chiunque lo mangi, trasformandolo in un morto vivente.
