Nella dormiente cittadina di Castle Rock, un forestiero di nome Leland Gaunt (Max von Sydow) apre “Cose Preziose”, un negozio che vende ogni tipo di oggetti, anche i più introvabili, realizzando i sogni dei clienti. Gaunt esige sempre un favore da coloro che non possono pagare il prezzo richiesto, ovvero un dispetto o uno scherzo da fare a qualche abitante. La situazione presto degenera, l'odio serpeggia, il caos collettivo non tarda a manifestarsi.
