Nel settembre del 1918, durante la Prima guerra mondiale, l'esercito francese ottiene una decisiva vittoria e la resa della Bulgaria. A distinguersi in quella battaglia sono gli uomini, tutti ex galeotti, comandati dal capitano Conan. Firmato l'armistizio, gli uomini di Conan, di stanza a Bucarest, si abbandonano a violenze e saccheggi. Viene inviato ad indagare sull'accaduto il tenente Norbert, buon amico di Conan.
