Edimburgo. Il calzolaio Burke e il tuttofare Hare vivono, con le rispettive consorti, nella stessa umile casa. Un giorno, per fare un favore ad alcuni amici, i due devono far sparire un cadavere: decidono di venderlo al dottor Knox studioso d'anatomia.
