Durante un esperimento di telepatia presso la Con sec, una potente multinazionale che si occupa di armamenti, accade un incidente: il conduttore dell'esperimento muore, il Dott. Ruth rivela ai dirigenti della società l'esistenza di una organizzazione formata da Scanners individui dotati di una potente forza telepatica. Il Dott. Ruth è l'inventore di un farmaco che è la causa di questa deformazione degli scanners, e insieme a Vale, si prodiga per fermare questo pericolo fino ad arrivare allo scontro inevitabile con Revock capo degli Scanners in una lotta ai limiti del paranormale. Questo film è magistralmente girato da David Cronenberg.
