Greg Fotter è follemente innamorato della sua fidanzata Pam ed è pronto a fare il grande passo. Ma Greg si rende conto che per ottenere la mano della ragazza dovrà prima conquistare la fiducia di suo padre, Jack Byrnes. Un week-end in famiglia sembrerebbe l'occasione ideale per una dichiarazione in piena regola… Ma le cose non vanno per il verso giusto. Greg si troverà a fare i conti con Jack, convinto che nessun uomo sia sufficientemente in gamba per sua figlia e il fatto che sia un infermiere, un nemico dei gatti e che abbia per giunta un cognome dal suono piuttosto volgare non contribuisce certo a migliorare la situazione. Le cose si mettono male fin dall'inizio e ben presto il week-end si trasforma in una serie di disastri esilaranti che si succederanno a ritmo sempre più incalzante.
