Partita da New York con la speranza di essere ammessa ad una scuola di ballo di Budapest, diretta dall'anziano e celebre coreografo Sandor, la graziosa Claire viene respinta alla selezione e conosce Jason, un giovane antiquario americano. Visitando un parco cittadino scopre una villa abbandonata ancora piena di ricchi costumi da scena. La villa era la dimora di Nathalie Moruath, danzatrice morta nel 1895 e, poco a poco, Claire si identifica con lei ed il suo mondo.
