Prima dell'avvento del sonoro, il film di John Stuart Robertson costituì l'adattamento cinematografico più famoso dalla celebre novella di Stevenson. La sua importanza risiede non tanto nell'interpretazione di Barrymore, quanto in alcuni aspetti che verranno poi ripresi da molte delle versioni successive. Il personaggio di Jekyll, ripreso in una ottantina di versioni cinematografiche, resta un capostipite del cinema horror, simbolo immortale dell'uomo che sfida coscientemente l'ignoto per avventurarsi in mondi inesplorati, penetrando nei terribili segreti della natura.
