Ruby Mountains, 1868. La GuerraCivile americana è terminata ma non per tutti. C'è ancora qualcuno checerca vendetta. Si tratta dell'ex militare sudista Carver che, con unpiccolo gruppo di uomini, dà la caccia al nordista Gideon. Il motivo lopossiamo intuire ben presto ma ne saremo certi solo nell'ultima partedella vicenda. Gideon fugge nei boschi innevati, viene ferito ed ècostretto a togliersi la pallottola da un braccio.
