Pochi album hanno avuto un tale impatto all'uscita come Jesus Christ Superstar nel 1970. Poiché i compositori Andrew Lloyd Webber e Tim Rice non sono riusciti a far decollare finanziariamente il progetto come musical, lo hanno pubblicato come opera rock. Membri di gruppi come Soft Machine e Fairport Convention e The Grease Band prestarono i loro servizi musicali ai compositori.
