Oltre alle esibizioni di gran successo al Monterey Pop ed a Woodstock, i leggendari concerti al Fillmore East rappresentarono la svolta decisiva della sua radiosa carriera così piena di infinite possibilità. L'impatto rivoluzionario che Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox e Buddy Miles ebbero nella definizione della musica Rock, R&B e Funk può essere infatti ricondotta a questi quattro concerti avvenuti nel corso di due serate memorabili. Alcune tracce di quelle esibizioni furono incluse per la prima volta in Band of Gypsys, che conteneva ben sei delle canzoni eseguite ai due concerti del 1. gennaio 1970, tra cui "Machine Gun", fulcro dell'album. Pubblicato poi nell'aprile 1970, Band of Gypsys aveva sfidato e sorpreso i fan di Jimi con i suoi arrangiamenti e con un vibrante mix di rock e soul. A giugno del 1969, al culmine della sua fama, The Jimi Hendrix Experience chiudeva un capitolo musicale importante. Prima che la risonanza di quel successo terminasse, Hendrix riunì un nuovo ensemble per esibirsi a Woodstock nell'agosto dello stesso anno. Un nuovo capitolo si aprì così quando Hendrix introdusse Gypsy Sun e Rainbows: questo ampio gruppo includeva l'amico di lunga data Billy Cox al basso, con cui aveva stretto amicizia ai tempi in cui prestarono servizio nella 101a divisione Airborne in Kentucky (1962). La formazione di Woodstock ebbe vita breve; dalle sue ceneri emerse in ottobre un nuovo trio che Hendrix soprannominò 'Band of Gypsys', composto dal bassista Cox e dal batterista Buddy Miles, che contribuì anche alla voce occasionalmente. Hendrix, ispirato così dalla sua nuova collaborazione, approfittò di questo rinnovamento creativo scrivendo nuovi brani come "Power Of Soul", "Burning Desire" e lo straordinario "Machine Gun".Le esibizioni live raccolte in questo cofanetto rappresentano una serie di quattro concerti al Fillmore East di Manhattan - due risalenti alla vigilia di Capodanno del 1969 e due al Capodanno del 1970 - ciascuno dei quali programmato proprio per delle registrazioni professionali. Hendrix aveva fatto sold out al Madison Square Garden solo nove mesi prima, ma il Fillmore East era stato scelto per uno scopo diverso: molto prima di diventare famoso, l'artista aveva firmato quello che pensava fosse laccordo per una uscita singola di un album di studio nell'ottobre del 1965. Sfortunatamente, l'accordo firmato con PPX Industries prevedeva i suoi servizi per un periodo di tre anni e, non essendo più disposto ad avere le mani legate, Hendrix accettò un accordo legale in base al quale Capitol Records avrebbe avuto i diritti di distribuzione del suo album successivo. Nell'autunno del 1969, Capitol e PPX insistettero entrambi per la consegna di un album ed Hendrix decise di dare loro un live. Per quanto stressante fosse stato questo obbligo legale per il chitarrista, il risultato finale fu un vero trionfo artistico. Fedele alla sua imprevedibilità, Hendrix aveva aperto i quattro spettacoli con un set di undici esecuzioni magistrali del tutto inedite: nuove emozionanti canzoni come "Izabella", "Ezy Ryder" e "Burning Desire" entusiasmarono il Fillmore completamente sold-out.
