Un magistrato prossimo alla pensione, uomo di cultura, è il comandante di un avamposto al confine ultimo dell'Impero, oltre il quale si trovano i cosiddetti "barbari", le sfuggenti popolazioni nomadi originarie di quelle terre desertiche.
