David Copperfield nasce nell'Inghilterra industriale senza padre e senza sconti. Curioso e vivace, è allevato dalla madre e dall'amorevole governante. A spezzare l'idillio arriva Mr. Murdstone, uomo intransigente e crudele che sposa la madre e lo spedisce a Londra a lavorare nella sua fabbrica 'di cristallo'.
