Sembra solo una leggenda metropolitana. Un videotape con immagini terrificanti: chi lo guarda riceve una misteriosa telefonata che annuncia la sua morte esattamente sette giorni dopo. La giornalista Rachel Keller è, come tutti i suoi colleghi, scettica al riguardo, ma quando quattro adolescenti muoiono uno dopo l'altro in circostanze poco chiare, una settimana dopo aver visto il videotape, la sua curiosità ha il sopravvento. Dopo aver ottenuto e visto il video chiede aiuto all'amico Noah per salvare la sua vita e quella di suo figlio. Intanto, ha solo sette giorni per risolvere il mistero....
