Walter Black, presidente di un'azienda di giocattoli sull'orlo dl fallimento, soffre di una grave forma di depressione. Quando la moglie lo caccia di casa, trova la marionetta di un castoro (beaver) e inizia ad animarla. Walter diventa cosi' simpaticissimo, un vero vulcano di energia e di idee. Riesce a riconciliarsi con la moglie e il figlio piccolo e a riportare l'azienda al successo. Ma presto, The Beaver, diventa troppo ingombrante e, infine anche pericoloso.
