Margherita è una regista. Sta girando un film sul mondo del lavoro, di cui ha chiamato come protagonista un eccentrico e bizzoso attore americano. Ma Margherita ha anche una madre ricoverata in ospedale, che assiste assieme al fratello Giovanni, fratello e figlio perfetto che è sempre un passo avanti a lei. La madre di Margherita e Giovanni, dicono i medici, non ha molto tempo. Tra le riprese di un film che si rivelano più complicate del previsto, una figlia 13enne con problemi col latino (quello stesso latino che insegnava la madre), e il dolore per un lutto che si sa imminente e non si sa come gestire, Margherita confonde realtà, sogno, ricordo e deve trovare la sua strada in tutta quella sofferenza.
