Aron Ralston, 26 anni, entusiasta dello sport e della libertà, si concede una giornata di biking e trekking nel Blue John Canyon dello Utah. Sole, musica, paesaggi mozzafiato e un fortuito incontro con due belle escursioniste che si prestano a tuffi e risate: cosa chiedere di più? Tornato solo, però, scendendo un crepaccio, Aron smuove inavvertitamente un masso vecchio di milioni di anni e si ritrova immobilizzato, con un braccio bloccato tra questo e la roccia, praticamente senza cibo né acqua. Sopravvivrà 5 giorni in condizioni fisiche e psicologiche gravissime, arrivando, per liberarsi, a segarsi il braccio con un coltellino.
