Andrew Beckett, giovane avvocato, è stato licenziato dallo studio legale presso cui lavora. I suoi colleghi sostengono che non era competente; Andrew afferma di essere stato licenziato perché malato di AIDS. Deciso a difendere la propria reputazione, Andrew assume Joe Miller, un avvocato, perché lo rappresenti nella causa per licenziamento illecito.
