How vinyl is made: lacquers, mothers, and stampers

A record starts from a master cut (lacquer disc or DMM on copper), plated to create a chain: father, mother, and stamper. Each stamper has a limited lifespan—roughly 800–2000 copies before quality declines and replacement is needed.

Sleeve number ≠ pressing order

Numbers are applied on sleeves or stickers during packaging, not aligned with pressing order. Copy #1 may come mid-run, while #2000 could be from a fresh stamper. The number signals edition size and collectibility, not quality.

Why two copies can sound different

Stamper wear

Fresh stampers press cleaner copies; worn stampers may add noise or distortion. Plants replace them before major decline.
